Virtually any material can used as a blasting media.  From your breakfast granola, to high tech composites, any solid or liquid substance, when propelled at sufficient speed onto a surface, will alter that surface, thus becoming a blasting media.

Here is a partial listing of those most common:

  • Aluminum Oxide
  • Silicon Carbide
  • Glass Bead
  • Crushed Glass
  • Ceramic Shot
  • Steel Shot
  • Steel Grit
  • Plastic Bead
  • Pumice
  • Walnut Shell
  • Corn Cob
  • Soda
  • Dry Ice

Important to consider are 6 characteristics of a blasting media, each of which, either alone or in combination, will significantly change the surface results or the cost of achieving the desired surface condition.  They are:

1.)   Density/Specific Gravity

2.)   Hardness (Moh)

3.)   Shape

4.)   Size

5.)   Chemical Composition

6.)   Cost/Recovery/Availability

Often times the lesser aggressive and smaller media that achieves the finish desired will be the most economical in production

Surface Blasting Systems has vast experience in testing, sampling and documented results with nearly all types of commercially available media.  Let us help you find the proper one to attain the surface condition you desire.
